It appears that escorting prisoners from jail to the court is quite an expensive process, so Indian authorities have started considering the use of video-conferencing technology to cut costs.

According to a report published by Times of India, the Bombay High Court suggested the local government the installation of Skype, Microsoft’s VoIP platform that could be used to establish video calls over the Internet.

“Almost all lower courts have computer facilities. All that you (government) have to do is install data connection and then Skype in them. In the long run this will be cheaper than installing LCD sets in each and every court,” Justice A. M. Khanwilkar said in a statement.

In case the project gets the green light, prisoners would no longer have to be escorted to the court, so they could easily get their sentence without even leaving their cells. A decision on the matter is expected to be made on March 14.
