Windows NT was officially launched 20 years ago, so Microsoft has decided to publish a blog post just to remind everyone that its operating system “can almost drink legally.”

“July 27th 2013 will be the 20th birthday of Windows NT which is quite the birthday. It can almost drink legally! Just the thought of 20 years makes greybeards like Doug 'Bad Cop' Symalla spit out his morning coffee. If you happen to meet Doug have him tell you some stories from the 'old days'. They are entertaining,” a Microsoft exec wrote.

Windows NT is still considered the foundation of the Windows operating system, as it was the first version of Microsoft's software released with full 32-bit support.

While the first version of the OS was marked as build number 3.1, Microsoft continues to use the same platform labeling system, so Windows 8 is also internally known as Windows NT version number 6.2.
