Just like the other Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Paul Allen has a special affinity for expensive art, so he’s currently the owner of several unique paintings that are worth millions of dollars.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Paul Allen has sold a royal-blue abstract painting created by Barnett Newman for no less than $43.8 million (€34 million) at the Sotheby’s auction this week.

It appears that an Italian bidder who took part to the auction by telephone is the lucky buyer of the painting created in 1953 and part of the famous “Zip” series.

Bill Gates, on the other hand, has spent no less than $30.8 million (€23.6 million) for a da Vinci manuscript that’s apparently inspiring for the world’s second richest man at this point. The 500-year-old manuscript presents da Vinci’s thoughts on the properties and uses of water.
