Microsoft has officially killed its MSN TV web browsing set-top box, explaining that today’s technologies make such a product pretty much obsolete.

Redmond hasn’t talked too much on the closure, but as GeekWire points out, the company rolled out a small FAQ to provide guidance to users who need more information once the service goes dark.

“WebTV (later called MSN TV) started in 1996 with the goal to bring new people ‘online’ and to give those already online an easy, hassle-free means of accessing the internet from the comfort of their homes. Later, MSN TV 2 was released with vastly greater power and features. Since then, the web has continued to evolve at a breathtaking pace, and there are many new ways to access the internet,” the company explained.

Many didn’t even know that MSN TV still existed, so Microsoft’s decision to shut down this project pretty much makes sense, especially since the company is trying to focus its efforts on several other technologies.
