Ever since Microsoft officially introduced the new Windows 8.1, the company started praising the native 3D printing support, saying that it’s the first operating system coming with such a feature.

After promoting this option with several occasions, the company has now turned to the upcoming movie The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug to showcase Windows 8.1’s printing support, as part of a deal with Warner Bros.

In-app ads are already being displayed on Windows 8.1, while on December 13, the day when the movie will hit theaters, these ads will be used to allow users to download a 3D printer blueprint of The Key to Erebor free of charge.

“We’re incredibly excited about this integrated partnership opportunity. We asked Microsoft to come up with a solution that challenged the previous conventions around what was possible with its display offering and we’re confident this interactive campaign will excite and engage fans as they journey into the second film in the Trilogy,” Danni Murray, director of Media and Marketing Partnerships, Warner Bros UK & Ireland, said.
