The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham will switch to Chromebooks very soon

Windows XP will be discontinued in just a few days, so the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham has decided to make a dramatic change to its hardware configuration in order to stay secure after end of support arrives.

A report published by Computing reveals that the council has decided to deploy Google Chromebooks and step away from Windows XP, thus managing to save approximately 200,000 pounds for not choosing Windows and another 200,000 pounds worth of electricity.

Rupert Hay-Campbell, ICT and information governance officer at the borough, explained that they picked Samsung’s 303C for the increased battery life and portability, so nearly 3,500 desktop computers will be replaced as part of the new project.

If you’re wondering whether the new Windows 8 was considered an option or not, authorities are claiming that the high licensing costs of the operating system pushed them to Google’s Chromebooks.

“We are in a position where our Microsoft licensing relationship means we are able to use the Chromebooks with a Citrix estate, without needing a new Microsoft enterprise agreement. VDI was working out more expensive, as we would have had to buy software assurance from Microsoft in order to run a true virtual desktop,” Hay-Campbell revealed.

Of course, Microsoft can’t be pleased with such news, but at least some Windows XP computers are upgraded to something that’s a bit more secure.
