Microsoft has just announced that it signed a deal with RES Americas to purchase all the energy produced by Keechi Wind Farm, a new project that will be built in Texas by the end of 2015.

The new wind farm, which will feature a total of 55 wind turbines, will be capable of producing an output of 110 megawatts of renewable energy which, Microsoft says, should be enough to provide power to 55,000 homes at peak production.

“We have a long standing ambition to move in the direction of sourcing more clean energy as a company, so over the last few years we’ve increasingly purchased something called RECs – renewable energy credits (more than 2.3 billion kWh globally) – and so this is an opportunity to go to the next stage and invest directly in green energy,” says Rob Bernard, Microsoft’s chief environmental strategist.

This isn’t Microsoft’s only investment in the green industry, as the company recently started building a pilot datacenter in Cheyenne, Wyoming, while also opening a datacenter in Dublin, Ireland using a thermodynamic cooling process.
