Windows 8.1 comes with a long list of improvements, most of which are aimed at users of the Modern interface, but Redmond has also implemented a number of changes supposed to enhance graphics performance.

DirectX 11.2 is part of the package and, according to Microsoft, apps and games based on this tech will perform better and eat less memory, thus making them appropriate not only for desktop PCs, but also for laptops and tablets.

“Graphics performance is an important aspect of overall system performance, and for Windows 8.1 DirectX 11.2 includes some great improvements. DirectX 11.2 runs leaner and faster than previous DirectX versions. With these performance optimizations both everyday tasks in Windows and apps like DirectX games will perform better and consume less memory,” the company said.

Microsoft then goes on to describe some of the new features in DirectX 11.2, including tiled resources for better video quality.

“HLSL shader linking to reduce game footprint and speed up level loading times, and low-latency presentation for more responsive gameplay experiences,” it notes.
