Microsoft is reportedly testing prototypes of a Google Glass-like device that would mark the company’s debut in the wearable tech industry to compete against other large companies working on such products.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft is now testing Internet-connected eyewear that seems to be aimed at challenging Google’s Glass, but no other specifics have been provided.

While Microsoft’s intention to focus more on wearable devices is not a new plan, eyewear wearing Redmond’s branding might not see daylight until late 2014.

At the same time, sources familiar with the matter are also reporting that Microsoft is working on a smart watch powered by Windows and equipped with a touch-capable display, but once again, the Softies are struggling to keep everything secret on the subject.

It’s not yet clear whether the Google Glass rival could be part of the Xbox product lineup and serve as a gaming device, but the company recently filed for patents for a head-mounted display specifically designed with gaming in mind.
