Now that the second-generation Surface Pro 2 is already up for preorder, Microsoft can proceed with its plans to discontinue the existing model, thus trying to boost sales of the revamped version.

While the company confirmed in a short statement that the current Surface Pro won’t be available via retail stores starting with October 22, it has now put things straight and revealed that this particular version would only be sold via commercial resellers.

“Surface Pro will continue to be available via authorized commercial resellers. However, after October 22, Surface Pro will no longer be available for purchase from Microsoft or its retail partners in most markets where Surface Pro 2 is sold,” the company said in a statement according to UberGizmo.

Both the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 are available for preorder, with shipments to begin on October 22. The first Pro model, on the other hand, was launched only 7 months ago with much fanfare, so Microsoft’s decision to stop selling it is as surprising as it is proof that it only recorded average sales.
