Microsoft is apparently listening to feedback received from Windows 8 users, as the company might bring back the popular Start button in the upcoming refresh of its flagship operating system.

Citing unnamed sources close to the matter, Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet writes that the Redmond-based technology giant could reintroduce the classic Start button on the Windows platform as soon as this summer.

While this is only a rumor and we shouldn’t take it for granted, it appears that Microsoft is working to address some essential consumer complaints in Windows 8.1, including not only the lack of a Start button, but also the option to skip the Metro UI and boot directly to desktop.

According to some new reports, the software giant is currently pondering the possibility of developing dedicated settings that would enable Windows 8.1 adopters to skip Metro altogether and load the desktop at startup.

More information, however, will be provided in the coming months, as Microsoft is expected to unveil the public preview of Windows 8.1 at the BUILD developer conference in June.
