Microsoft has clearly spent a fortune trying to make Windows 8 a successful operating system, but unofficial data points to a rather slow uptake of the latest Windows iteration.

And still, the tech giant is ready to continue big investments in this platform, especially because the company will soon debut Windows 8.1, the first important makeover of the current Windows 8.

This is the opinion of IDC analyst Tom Mainelli who told V3 that Microsoft would most likely continue to promote both Windows 8 and the Surface tablet as major upgrades for both of them are in the pipeline for a summer release.

“I fully believe there will be additional Windows 8 Surface products, Microsoft has denied it, but I think we can expect a Surface phone at some point,” Mainelli said.

“Microsoft wants to keep serving its partners, but long term it sees the world becoming at least three major platforms.”

Word is that Microsoft is already working on the second-generation Surface tablet, with the BUILD developer conference in June expected to witness the first public unveiling.
