Microsoft has announced that it plans to bring mapping infrastructure to Brazilian favelas in an attempt to improve its making service and allow users to view unexplored communities.

The company says that it’s already working on mapping infrastructure and according to a statement released today, this is more likely to help tourists than local residents.

“A Microsoft team in Brazil has begun a project to start building out this mapping infrastructure in the favelas,” Microsoft said in a post.

“The team is seeking to build the necessary infrastructure to enable the many parties necessary for the communities to fully participate in the digital town square in ways that many of us in the developed online world take for granted. The lessons they learn, and the insights derived from the Global Innovation Summit we hope will serve as a model to reduce the digital divide across the world.”

More information will be provided in the coming months, Redmond guarantees, as it’s still working on the project and collaborating with those involved to bring unexplored communities to the mapping service.
