Gartner says Windows will sell much better in the future

Windows 8 isn’t quite the best-selling OS on the market, especially when it comes to tablets, but analysts are claiming that things could change in the coming years, as some users might return to laptops and desktop computers.

Gartner estimates that Android will increase its shipments by 55 percent until 2015, while iOS and Mac devices will post an overall growth of 34 percent.

Windows, on the other hand, will only boost sales by 16 percent, which is less impressive, but still good enough to show that the modern operating system is starting winning users, even though that’s only expected to happen after the launch of Windows 9.

“Tablet substitution of notebooks will start to dissipate from this year onwards as consumers and businesses align the right device with the right usage pattern,” said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner. “As they do this, we will see where dedicated devices (such as tablets), or hybrid devices (detachable or convertible devices), fit in the overall portfolio of devices.”

Windows 9 is expected to launch in April 2015 and come with versions for desktops and tablets alike, which means that Microsoft will continue to tackle both worlds with the same operating system. The company will, however, try to tweak the OS better for each side of the industry, so expect the desktop to be much more successful thanks to the new OS version.
