Microsoft blocks non-activated copies from setting wallpapers and changing colors

Windows 8.1 is now alive and kicking, so Microsoft hopes to see increased sales of the OS, just to make sure that its modern platform has a chance to succeed.

As always, Microsoft is trying to make sure that everybody is running a licensed copy of Windows 8.1 by implementing a series of limitations for those sticking to non-activated versions.

Just like it happened with Windows 8, the new 8.1 blocks users from setting a new desktop wallpaper or changing the colors on the Start screen. This means that Windows 8.1 restricts access to most of the personalization screen unless you activate the operating system.

In addition, Windows 8.1 places a watermark on the desktop indicating that you need to activate the OS, while a new entry shows up in PC settings to help you do this quicker.

Last but not least, you’re provided with a full-screen activation request every few hours, with displayed options to either activate the operating system or close the popup and continue your work.
