Pressing a button on the keyboard usually has instant visible feedback on-screen. Typing for a long time makes you look less and less at the keyboard, and you might want to know whether or not special keys are active.

Not all keyboards are equipped with LED light indicators for Caps, Num, and Scroll lock. However, there are computer applications that let you know their state through custom notifications. The following tools can be easily used to your advantage in this regard.

Setting up keyboard desktop indicators

Step 1: Download, install, and run Keyboard Leds.

Step 2: Use the drop-down menus to arrange indicators and colors to show.

Step 3: Enable On Screen Display for better notifications.

Step 4: Drag the (initial) red box anywhere on your desktop.

Step 5: Set size, body and text color, transparency, as well as what to display.

Step 6: Right-click the desktop indicator to quickly Switch Num, Caps, and Scroll states.

Alternative program

Step 1: Download, install, and run Clever Keyboard Indicator.

Note: Three more icons are now placed in the system tray for Scroll, Num, and Caps states.

Step 2: Click on a tray icon to toggle its state.

Step 3: Right-click any tray icon and select Options for display configurations.

Step 4: Select an item from the list to change icons, name, and sound alerts.

Step 5: Click on Add New to create notifications for any keyboard button.

Step 6: Switch to the OSD tab to customize On Screen Display visuals.

Note: Choosing to Show OSD while key pressed leaves notifications on screen while button states are on.
