Free application promises to improve the Start screen a little bit

The Start screen is Microsoft’s controversial Start menu replacement in Windows 8 and, although plenty of users have criticized it, the company is now making several adjustments to turn it into a much more helpful Windows feature.

A new application that got to see daylight today, on the other hand, promises to do the same thing faster and easier. Called Start Screen Unlimited, this free app brings the power options right on the Start screen, along with a search box to quickly look for information on Google, but also with a clock and date.

You can thus reboot, power off, sleep, or hibernate your device from the Start screen, but also perform some other simple tasks that now require several clicks or taps.

The problem with this app is that almost the same features are going to be implemented by Microsoft in Windows 8.1 Update, the first major set of improvements for Windows 8.1 and scheduled to be launched in April. Developers thus need to continue work on the project and either refine the existing features or add new ones before their app becomes obsolete.

Overall, it’s still an app to try if you’re not entirely satisfied with the Modern UI, so download Start Screen Unlimited right now to give it a shot.
