Now that Steve Ballmer has confirmed his retirement, all eyes are on the next company CEO who, according to Microsoft, might come from either inside or outside Redmond.

But whoever comes next will decide the company’s fate, Patrick Moorhead, president of Moor Insights & Strategy, said in a statement for MarketWatch.

Microsoft must decide its main focus, he said, explaining that the company has been particularly interested in a more commercial approach.

“The first thing Microsoft is going to have to do is rationalize and decide if they are going to have to be a consumer or a commercial company. But they have been successful in commercial but not so in consumer,” he said.

According to some sources familiar with the matter, Google’s Vic Gundotra is one of those who could take over from Ballmer, especially because he already worked for Microsoft in the past and could come with fresh ideas from the search rival.
