Windows Phone maintained its share throughout the year

Microsoft struggled to make Windows Phone more successful in 2014 and although all eyes are now on Windows 10 for phones and the preview that’s likely to ship to users very soon, it’s still interesting to see how Redmond’s mobile platform actually performed last year.

Needless to say, Windows Phone was still behind Android and iOS in terms of market share, but what’s important is that Microsoft’s platform managed to hold steady throughout the year and its number of users only varied by a few percentage points.

Windows Phone started 2014 with a share of 2.16 percent and increased it to 2.22 percent in February, according to figures provided by StatCounter.

The biggest market share was reached in November 2014, when 2.42 percent of the phones in the world were powered by Windows Phone, but then fell to 2.25 percent in December 2014.

Android, on the other hand, continued its growth and after starting the year with a share of 44.62 percent, it reached a record of 59.9 percent in November, before eventually dropping to 59.15 percent.

iOS had a share of 23.55 percent in January and topped at 25.96 percent in October, but then declined once again to 23.51 percent in December.

Windows 10 for phones is expected to help Microsoft get more users in the smartphone market, but it’s obviously hard to tell right now if the company has any chance to compete with Android and iOS.
