According to the VideoLAN Organization, the non-profit group developing VLC, the number of downloads of their media player off their servers has gone past the 1 billion barrier.

However, notes the same source, the number is likely to be inaccurate, since recording of the download statistics began in February 2005.

On the other hand, the number does not account for Linux downloads because the player reached Linux users through distributions. Also, if software distributors are to be taken into consideration, the amount of transfers is much bigger.

As per their numbers, Windows users account for most of the downloads with a total of almost 900 million transfers.

The Mac version was downloaded a little over 100 million times. Peaks were recorded for version 1.1.1 of the player, with 188 million downloads, and 0.8.6, with 117 million downloads.
