Oracle released a major update for their virtualization software package, VirtualBox. Version 4.2 implements a set of new features, chief among them being improved Windows 8 support, with focus on 3D-related repairs.

The new build allows you to change some of the settings during runtime and on Linux, OS X and Solaris you can start the virtual machines at system boot time. In the case of Linux, there is also experimental support for “drag and drop” function. On Windows hosts, VirtualBox 4.2 has support for parallel port passthrough.

Furthermore, VirtualBox can work with up to 36 network cards and brings to the table network I/O control for imposing bandwidth limits.

Apart from the new features, this revision also brings to the table a slew of fixes, which can be viewed on this page.
