No changelog available, security product issues false positive alert

It’s not often that WinZip receives an update, but the developing company released a new version for the product, incrementing the revision number to 17.5.

With no official information about the changes that occurred in this build, we can only assume that its purpose is to do away with minor problems.

However, some users may be a bit reticent to keeping the new WinZIP on their systems, since some security products may raise the flag in the case of “ssleay32.dll” file that installs with the archiver.

The alert is most likely a false positive, as “ssleay32.dll” is a module associated with The OpenSSL Toolkit from the OpenSSL Project.

The file was introduced in WinZip 17 (reviewed here), which is the first release of the product to feature secure online sharing capabilities.

Symantec's engine seems to have been the first to issue the alert, but they have already addressed the problem. Furthermore, VirusTotal now shows TrendMicro-HouseCall as the only product marking the file as a possible threat.
