Microsoft will stop providing patches and security updates for Windows XP on April 8 and although the company hopes the majority of users will move to Windows 8.1, it turns out that Windows 7 is the preferred choice for almost everyone.

A report posted by The Channel and citing figures offered by eCommerce analyst Terapeak show that Windows 7 is selling like hot cakes these days, as Windows XP users are looking for a new operating system for their computers.

In January 2014, consumers worldwide purchased a total of 11,042 Windows 7 copies, up from 5,661 in June 2013. This means that Windows 7 sales totaled $774,773 (€557,872) in the first month of this year, as compared to $409,871 (€294,109) seven months ago.

Of course, seeing so many people choosing Windows 7 is not at all surprising given the fact that Windows 8 brings quite a lot of changes, including the removal of a Start button and a new Metro UI that’s more appropriate for the touch.

As far as Windows XP is concerned, 29 percent of the desktop computers worldwide are still running it, which means that the transition to a newer operating system won’t be completed before April 8, so quite a lot of users would stick to this OS version after retirement.
