As I told you earlier today, Microsoft is planning to merge the Windows Store and the Windows Phone Store into a single app repository that would be available through all its platforms.

It turns out that Microsoft is trying to implement the change rather sooner than later, with ZDNet now claiming that a single app store could be released as soon as early 2014.

The company is said to be working on what’s being called the Spring 2014 GDR update, a larger set of changes for Windows 8.1 that would be different from regular monthly patches.

In addition to some other changes, the update is also said to include this app store merger, as Microsoft is hoping to solve the lack of Metro apps on specific devices in quite an easy way.

As usual, the company is yet to comment on this, but more information would most likely be provided in the coming months as we get closer to the official Windows 8.1 launch.
