While most market researchers claim that Windows 7 is currently the world’s number one operating system, data provided by web-based game development platform Unity reveals that Windows XP is actually a lot more popular.

It turns out that 46.1 percent of users accessing the Unity system are still running Windows XP, while Windows 7 comes second with 44.9 percent.

Unfortunately for tech giant Microsoft, only 4.5 percent of the users have deployed Windows 8, while Windows Vista is currently powering only 3.0 percent of the computers.

Net Applications data, on the other hand, indicates that Windows XP is currently installed on more than 38 percent of computers worldwide, while Windows 7 rules the OS market with about 45 percent.

Microsoft has recently announced that it would discontinue Windows XP on April 8, 2014, thus requiring all users to make the move to a newer platform as soon as possible.
