Consumers do not necessarily need to dump Windows XP before end of support

Windows XP will officially be retired on April 8, 2014, and even though Microsoft encourages everyone to make the move to newer software, security institute AV-TEST says that a powerful app to protect your computer should be enough for some time.

This could also be one of the reasons why Microsoft is also planning to stop providing new virus definitions for Security Essentials on Windows XP after April 8, with Redmond issuing warnings that staying on this particular OS is very risky for everyone.

And still, AV-TEST says that, while the lack of Windows updates could cause some issues, a powerful security product should overcome this major drawback.

“Although these updates are currently still being sent to Windows 7, 8 and XP on a regular basis, this will change in April 2014 when Microsoft completely stops its support updates for Windows XP, thus leaving the attackers free to run riot on XP systems. The only protection solution remaining for XP users from April 2014 onwards is to install a good security suite!” it said.
