You still need a compatible device to watch it, though

Microsoft has just announced that Windows 10 adopters can now enjoy exclusive 4K video support on Netflix using Edge browser, which comes by default on all devices running the latest OS.

Although this is pretty good news for Netflix subscribers, not everyone can enjoy the 4K quality, even if they’re running Windows 10. According to Microsoft itself, you need a Windows 10 device that supports 4K, and this includes a system with a 4K-capable display plus a 7th-generation Intel Core processor.

Microsoft used this occasion to emphasize how good its Edge browser actually is as compared to competition, explaining that using it to watch content on Netflix provides you with longer battery life than Google Chrome (which for some reason has become its main target for browser ads and benchmarks).

“When streaming Netflix on Microsoft Edge you can get through at least one more full episode of Gilmore Girls than when streaming on Chrome on battery – and you know one episode can be the difference between Chris and Lorelai casually dating and being a married couple,” the company explained.

More recently, the company rolled out Microsoft Edge ads to emphasize that its browser is faster and more secure than Google Chrome, so this little remark doesn’t come as a big surprise.

Of course, 4K content is only available for Netflix subscribers whose plans include Ultra HD quality, and depends on some other factors too, including Internet service, device capabilities, and content availability.
