Protect the artwork that you share online from AI models by tricking them to view other concepts than the ones in your images via this app. #AI protection #Distract AI #Machine learning defense #Protection #Machine learning #AI
Nightshade is an app designed to safeguard digital artwork from being misused by artificial intelligence. Its primary function involves transforming images into data samples that are incompatible with model training, effectively shielding them from potential misuse.
It looks and works similarly to Glaze
Before you get started, make sure that you have plenty of space on your computer, as the tool is quite large, and you need to download additional resources that will also take a lot of space. Fortunately, this is a one-time requirement, unless the team decides to add extra model libraries in the future.
It is made by the same team who made Glaze, the difference between them being that the latter adds a layer of protection against style mimicry. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that it has a similar interface. Add your image and proceed to adjusting the Intensity and Render Quality settings.
Unlike Glaze, this tool also includes an optional Poison Tag setting, which has the role of teaching the AI model an incorrect view of what a particular subject looks like. The app analyzes your image and suggests a tag that you can change accordingly.
Take note that the program poisons only one concept for the image, so take your time to select the right tag for it. In the end, the effectiveness of the tool depends on selecting the most appropriate tag for your picture.
The idea behind Nightshade is to prevent people from using images without permission by charging a small fee for each unauthorized use. This helps prevent misuse of pictures and encourages respect for copyrights.
If you have been dealing with misuse or unauthorized use of your content despite the opt-out lists and do-not-scrape/robots.txt directives, perhaps you can consider giving this tool a try.
What's new in Nightshade 1.0.1:
- Hey all, we finally implemented a workaround to get a version of Nightshade working on Mac GPUs. The prior issue was PyTorch Mac GPU support, which we've found some hacks around. The new version runs on Mac M1/M2/M3 chips, and does not require any additional GPU drivers. See below for the download link.
