Copycat

Copycat is a lightweight software application designed specifically for helping you copy data from CDs/DVDs even if the file presents read errors. It comes in handy for exporting data from scratched DVDs that do not play. Copying the VOB files leads to read errors which automatically terminate the process.

Copycat is able to bypass the problematic sectors and ignore the errors so the resulting files will have missing chunks where the media is skipped.

You are welcomed by a clean and straightforward design that hides only a few configuration settings under the hood. There’s no support for a help manual but you can manage to tweak the entire configuration process on your own.

You are allowed to open the disc that you want to copy or location that contains the files, stop the copying process, and view details about each file stored on the disc, such as filename, path, size, and status.

The log panel is embedded at the bottom side of the main window and records information about the copying process and possible errors. There’s support for a built-in analyzer mode that helps you verify the integrity of the disc before copying files.

A few configuration settings allow you to specify the number of times to retry reads when the process fails and enter the amount of kilobytes to read per chunk. You can also restore the values to the default ones with a single click.

Tests have shown that the utility carries out a task pretty quickly. It doesn’t eat up a lot of CPU and memory resources, so the overall performance of the system is not hampered.

All things considered, Copycat makes it possible for your system to ignore errors upon copying files from damaged CDs/DVDs. Although the resulting video includes missing chunks, at least you can save some parts of it. The intuitive feature pack makes it suitable for rookies and professionals alike.
