If you are like me, then you have your list of favorite apps that you frequently use and need to have within reach. The most comfortable way to access them is, in my opinion, the shortcuts on the desktop.

However, when the number of apps and shortcuts gets higher, the desktop gets too cluttered to find anything quickly. A means of keeping everything organized becomes mandatory. ShortCutBar can be a solution to this issue.

The purpose of this application is to help you free up the desktop area by organizing shortcuts while still preserving quick access to favorite apps and frequently used files.

Multiple panels can be created, much like categories of shortcuts, which can help you separate work files and apps from personal content and find the tools you need much faster. For instance, you can create a panel for games, one for work apps and one for documents.

Panels are all included in a tiny window that does not get bigger than needed. To put it another way, the more icons you add to ShortCutBar, the bigger the window gets. When ShortCutBar hosts only a few icons or shortcuts, you see a tiny window on the screen and get that free desktop you dream of.

Looking a bit under the hood, I discovered that the appearance of the shortcut panels in ShortCutBar can be customized. It is possible to change the color of the background and the name of each panel. Just as easy, ShortCutBar allows you to reorder shortcuts and add a space between icons to get an airier look.

To avoid interfering with your work, ShortCutBar comes with a few suggestions: you can either configure it to automatically hide the mini window when the computer is idle or, alternatively, dock the window to the screen and create sort of a taskbar for all your shortcuts.

ShortCutBar provides an appealing means of keeping shortcuts organized and accessing apps and files via a launch bar. It can surely find its way to the desktop of any user to keep the desktop and the work area uncluttered. I get the feeling that, once you try it and get accustomed to it, it might be a bit difficult to give up this way of organizing shortcuts.
