Goodnight Timer

The computer is now an integrated part of our daily lives and habits. As such, you might use it late at night, and even risk falling asleep while your computer keeps running for no reason. In this regard, Goodnight Timer comes with the means to help you set up a timer to shut down your computer and reduce the volume before this happens.

It doesn’t take a lot of time to go through the setup process, and you’re also offered to have the application launched right afterwards. Note, however, the .NET Framework needs to be installed on the target computer to be able to properly use the program.

The interface is rather simplistic, but it helps to get you quickly up and running. The main window holds all necessary functions, including a neat visual representation of how sound gets reduced over time. The set of shutdown controls is right above the sound reduction graph, and you can choose to toggle the state of either functions.

As mentioned, one of the core functions is to shut down the computer. This can either be done after a particular amount of seconds, minutes, or hours, as well as at an exact time you set in a 12 hour clock. You can choose to have all running programs forcefully closed on shutdown, at the risk of losing any unsaved data.

Shutdown is not a mandatory action, nor is the volume reduction. If enabled, volume reduction is easy to configure. Reduction is not suddenly performed, with the possibility to set the period in seconds, minutes, or hours. This can be linear or exponential, with values for start and end volume. The application can restore the original volume value on next system start.

Taking everything into consideration, we can state that Goodnight Timer is a powerful shutdown timer, which doesn’t really force you to enable a function you don’t want. It can either be used to power off your computer or reduce volume in a specified interval, making it worth your while overall.
