As large as it may be, the desktop can get filled before you realize. Sure enough, you can store all items in a folder, but risk filling the space back up again. To prevent this from happening, applications like MPS Mini Desktop provide a simple space to keep all items of interest, and launch them with little effort.

Once installed, you’re free to launch the application to see what it’s all about. There’s a sample folder with a few items, and you’re able to add more, or create new groups. Before doing so, you might want to spend a little time to go through general settings to configure size, and startup folder.

Unfortunately, the main window can’t be manually resized, but there are five different size specifications for a bit more variety. You can set a different background image, a single color, make the image tiled, specify icon size, and even change the color of the text so it can be clearly viewed in regard to the background.

The new desktop space is different that your default workspace, but sadly for the worst. Manipulation options don’t allow you to interact with your actual desktop, while the context menu is only equipped with open, and properties links.

What’s more, settings up a different desktop, and even adding new items can be a bit of a pain. This is because you need to create dedicated folders in the application source location, fill them with all files, and shortcuts you need, and then access them through the address bar in the main window. Although multiple tabs are supported, these can’t be saved, and the location needs to be specified for every tab you open.

All things considered, we come to the conclusion that MPS Mini Desktop comes with good intentions, and aims to extend the capabilities of your desktop with extra space to store important items. However, you need to go to great lengths to perform even simple desktop management, while the variety of options at your disposal leave more to be desired overall.
