Even if you don’t have a multi-monitor configuration, the latest editions of Windows allow you to use virtual desktops (VD) to take advantage of the experience. Despite the numerous praises of the feature, it lacks some basic options.

Windows Virtual Desktop Helper is a tool designed to address some of the missing features and make managing VDs more convenient.

The application comes with a portable edition, which can come in handy for users who prefer keeping their system clean. The tool doesn’t have an interface, but it simply shows the number of the current virtual desktop in the Notification area.

Simply put, the app puts a small notification in the System Tray so that you always know on which virtual desktop you are now. This can save you a lot of time when you are switching between desktops and simply can’t find files or programs that are in another virtual desktop.

When switching to another VD the shows an overlay by default that includes both the VD number and the name, if you assigned one. You can configure the duration of the overlay further from the settings, as there are 3 options available, short, medium and long. Moreover, you can include animation and translucency.

On a side note, the developer clearly specifies that the tool is designed for Windows 10 and 11 and that older editions (Windows 7 and 8) along with Windows Server do not work.

Windows Virtual Desktop Helper can be a great tool for anyone who regularly works with virtual desktops. According to the developer, more options will be added in the future, including more configuration settings along with a console mode to be used with scripts.
