File managers come in all sorts of forms, and as we all know, the best software is the one that is most appropriate for your workflows. Users who favor minimalism over anything else might find it difficult to find such a tool, however, as file managers are generally known to be practical tools, full of menus and information to take in.
Solutions do exist, however, and those who are particularly interested in Terminal-based tools might find walk to be quite an appealing software proposition. This Terminal-based file managers allows users to handily navigate through their files to manage them.
Owing to the Terminal-based design, navigating through your files is an easy feat. Navigation is handled through the user's arrow keys, which they can use to go through their files, with the Enter and Backspace keys also being relevant for the navigation aspect. The former is used to access directories, while the latter is for exiting them.
Some files can be previewed. To access the Preview function, users will need to press the Space key to toggle it: while it won't preview your photos and videos, text-based files should be previewed without any problems, including HTML and XML ones.
To bring up the search to look up a certain file or directory, users will have to use the "/" key, after which they'll need to input the respective file or directory name. If you find anything worth deleting, pressing the "d" key twice should do it. You can undo this action through the "u" key within 5 seconds.
It should be noted that the software seems to have some trouble previewing some text-heavy files. Attempting to preview such a file will obstruct and hide some interface elements, though this goes away the second you navigate to a different file.
Aside from all of that, this is a rather simple file manager. While it may not satisfy the users looking for a more robust solution, walk nevertheless stands as a valid option for those on the lookout for something minimalist, but who can also appreciate a Terminal-based design.
