Magic Set Editor

Whether you want to recreate Magic the Gathering cards that you've lost from your original pack or just design custom cards to have fun with your friends using silly rules and outrageous characters, you can turn to Magic Set Editor. In addition to Magic the Gathering, it can be used for designing cards for Hellboy, Vanguard, Yu-Gi-Oh! and other card games.

The full package includes templates for all games, such as old and modern style (before and after the eight edition), flip, split, promotional and textless cards, among others. However, any unwanted items can be excluded from installation.

The seemingly simple application actually has numerous customization options under its hood, from designing entire card sets, setting the style and set information, to entering keywords and viewing statistics. Fortunately, all options are intuitive and fun.

The card creating operation is fairly easy, thanks to familiar image and text editing tools. You can insert local images with common filetypes, resize and sharpen them, write the creature name and select its rarity, insert symbols like tap, white mana and hybrid mana, as well as choose the card background color.

When it comes to the style, you can pick a card type (e.g. flip, split, promotional) and leave the default settings or change the artifact style, saturated multicolor, grey hybrid name, tap symbol, center text, and other info.

For the set information, it's possible to write the title, description, artist, copyright and symbol, as well as configure default and automatic settings (e.g. border color, reminder text, special rarity sort). You can also enter keywords and view statistics (e.g. casting cost, illustrator, loyalty).

Once your project is done, you can export it to HTML, card image, Apprentice or Magic Workstation filetype. It can be printed too, or saved to file to later open it and pick up where you left off. Magic Set Editor has a spellchecker and auto text replacement tool that can be configured to your liking.

The application hasn't received updates for a long time but it worked smoothly on Windows 10 in our tests. Although there are plenty of online services dedicated to custom magic cards, Magic the Gathering is a must-have desktop tool for any fan who wants to take their time and fully personalize cards without the help of an Internet connection.
