Monochrome

Monochrome is an IRC client mainly intended for more experienced users, who are familiar with the IRC commands. It does not comply to the standard look of applications in its category, but it shouldn't pose any problems during the configuration procedure.

In order to use it, the first thing you must do is set up the server connection. Monochrome requires you to enter the host name of the server and the corresponding port number and the login password (if any). Your identity is automatically detected using NickServ.

Also, it enables you to customize your nickname and password, configure the auto-join options, set the user modes and specify the text encoding to use. The application can save the connection details as a preset, which saves you the time needed to enter all the details once more in the future. Once the connection is established, you should be able to view the main server panel.

Monochrome comes with a few commands and options designed to ease your work. For instance, you can create a list of pre-defined messages that will be displayed in certain situations, such as quitting the connection, kicking out another user from the channel or when you go away from the PC.

When a new message is received, the application can either notify you using audio alerts or by flashing the main window. Alternatively, you can set trigger words. The application supports logging, allows file transfers and enables you to create custom ignore and half-ignore lists. The latter option means that the message is received, but your are not notified about it.

Monochrome is a reliable IRC client, but it is not meant for beginners. Aside from that, its only inconvenient is the rather dull interface, which could use a makeover.
