Discord is among the most popular messaging platforms out there. It is the default choice of many, and while there’s certainly a lot to be said about its handling of privacy, overall security, and performance-hungry nature, Discord is awfully easy to get started with.

Alternative Discord clients are there for those who depend on the platform, but want something a little more personalized. Dorion is a choice you may want to consider if so: it’s a take on Discord that focuses on offering greater performance and customizability.

If you’ve used Discord in the past, then you won’t have any problem acclimating to this one. It’s essentially the same thing, but with a few under-the-hood changes, so operating the app remains unchanged.

Aside from the client being more lightweight, both in size and resource consumption, as well as offering a portable option, there’s also the matter of the additional configurability options you get.

The Dorion menu under Settings is where the customization happens. You can freely switch between default, PTB, and Canary releases, tweak performance settings for a smoother experience on your system, and don’t hesitate to use Plugins and Themes if you’re after something new.

Plugins have the ability to mod your client to make it behave more to your liking. Vencord, Shelter, and Equicord are included by default. Shelter is enabled by default and cannot be disabled, while the other two are freely toggleable.

You can look up new plugins on the web to integrate them into your client. The built-in profile switcher works very well with this, as it enables you to switch between different plugin configurations at your leisure. Do note that Discord's ToS prohibits plug-in use, so it can be a bit of a grey area to get into.

Support for third-party themes is also available. None are installed by default, but you can go to the BetterDiscord website to find something that’s right for you.

Dorion isn’t necessarily what a beginner user would casually start looking for, but for anyone who’s more particular about their Discord experience, this is definitely something worth trying out.
