Downloading videos from YouTube is no novelty and there are various applications out there and even browser extensions that can carry out the task. Many of them are open-source and one example is ytdl-patched.

ytdl-patched is actually a fork of another open-source tool, namely yt-dlp, allowing you to download videos from YouTube using a console-based GUI. The so-called patched edition brings to the table several additional features, as you can read below.

As mentioned above, ytdl-patched is a console application, much like the original yt-dlp. It is as easy to use as yt-dlp, as you only need to provide the video URL to start the download. However, when it comes to the available settings and customization options, things are a bit different, since the patched edition comes with many options. ytdl-patched can download both individual videos and playlists (or selected videos in a playlist), as well as live streams from the current time onwards. You can configure it to wait for scheduled streams to begin and retry to download periodically. ytdl-patched can also download videos in batch using a list of URLs from a file, which is quite convenient.

There are filters that you can apply when downloading videos in batch. For instance, ytdl-patched allows you to block downloads that exceed a certain file size or are uploaded after or before a certain date. Additional downloading options include managing fragments and retries, setting the download buffer size or writing video descriptions.

It is also worth noting that geographical restrictions were also a concern for the developers of ytdl-patched. To be more specific, there are options to check and bypass geographical restrictions, if any.

ytdl-patched provides a comprehensive video grabber with various options and configurable settings that allow for better control over the download process. The syntax is simple, but some users might not be comfortable using a console-based application instead of one with a classic GUI.
