For starters, make sure to run the installer with administrator privileges in case unexpected events occur. It doesn’t take more than a few seconds to get it running on your PC once you put the setup process in motion.
Just so you can use the entire desktop for more important activities, the application stays in the system tray area. It monitors your inbox from there and immediately alerts you when it notices there’s a new message for you.
Running it for the first time brings up a prompt so you can connect to your account. Needless to say that you must write down your Google credentials, with the possibility to never be asked again by checking the option to remember details. Don’t worry, you can switch to a different account from the options panel.
Google’s mail service is structure in a different way, sorting promotions and social media invites from the rest of the inbox. In case you ignore those categories, you might end up with the application alerting you of an abundance of unread messages, and there’s no way to disable checking custom locations.
However, there are a few options to make the application a bit more comfortable. For instance, you can specify the interval to check your messages, and even load a WAV file to play as alerts for new items. The tray icon also flashes in this regard, and a small balloon tooltip shows up, letting you read a little of content, and even mark them as read.
All things considered, we come to the conclusion that Gmail Herald is a small, but practical utility which can alert you of new Gmail messages. Although the refresh rate can’t be lower than a minute, and you can’t select what mail categories to check, you’re sure to put it to good use and quickly get used to its services.
