ChatGPT for Google for Chrome

Artificial intelligence chatbots have been the subject of the day for quite some time, ever since the release of ChatGPT at the end of 2022. Not only that ChatGPT is the fastest-growing app in the world at this point, but developers started using the ChatGPT API to create AI-based applications more and more. One example is ChatGPT for Google, an extension for Google Chrome that allows the results of a ChatGPT query to be displayed right next to the regular search results of Google.

Installing ChatGPT for Google in Chrome is done via the Chrome Web Store, so there is no novelty there. The extension adds a new button in the browser’s toolbar, right next to the address bar, a button which allows you to access the extension’s settings.

The power of ChatGPT for Google is shown when a new search is initiated in Google or any of the other supported search engines. Despite its name, ChatGPT for Google provides compatibility with various other popular search engines, such as Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and more.

Querying the search engine displays the results normally, but a small ChatGPT panel is shown to the right, prompting you to login to your OpenAI account to proceed. Once you do so, a response from ChatGPT is also shown alongside the regular results.

ChatGPT for Google displays an answer if the extension is active, but you can also change its trigger. For instance, the add-on can be configured to initiate a new ChatGPT conversation if your question in the search form ends with a question mark. Alternatively, the extension can be queried only when a button is pressed.

The conversation with ChatGPT can continue in the small popup window. You can ask the chatbot anything you want, and it will provide an answer using AI technology.

The conversation can be easily opened in the default ChatGPT interface or even shared with others. Please keep in mind that sharing a conversation uploads the messages to ChatGPT for Google’s servers, making the content accessible to anyone who gets the share link.

ChatGPT for Google makes use of the OpenAI API and the GPT-3.5 / GTP-4 models to provide answers to your queries alongside the default search results. Having it around to compare answers is surely interesting, not to mention useful.
