Whenever you run into an interesting article in the web, you have to wonder whether you’ll actually have time to read it or if it is best to leave it for later. Unfortunately, though, there is no easy way to come up with an accurate estimate.

Sapi is a relatively simple Chrome extension that calculates the word count of articles on the web and determines how long it would take you to read them based on your recorded reading speed.

After installing the extension, you can go through a quick reading test. All you need to do is read a couple of paragraphs at a relaxed pace, and the extension will calculate your reading speed based on your time.

If you feel that the results are not accurate, you can change your preferred reading speed at any time from the extension’s settings.

Once you’ve completed the test, you can go ahead and open an article in your web browser. If the website is supported, a number will be displayed in the extension’s toolbar icon, which tells you how many minutes it would take you to read the article.

If you click the icon, you can also see a word count and access the extension’s settings. To take the initial reading test again, simply click the reset button.

You can’t always afford to take a 15-minute break just to read an article, but you may be able to spare 5 minutes for something particularly interesting. Sapi lets you know exactly how much time you will need, making it much easier to plan your reading sessions or determine whether or not an article is worth the effort.
