Google Docs is a popular solution for office work, and it comes with the usual Google benefits, such as automatic cloud backups and syncing with your account. Perhaps the only thing that users have to worry about when using Google Docs is the forced light mode, of which there's no option to disable.

Light mode might be well-suited for working on daytime, but as soon as your environment gets dimmer, the need for dark mode gets all the more pronounced. DocsAfterDark provides a customizable dark mode for Google Docs, and it comes in the form of a browser extension, available for the three mainstream solutions: Firefox, Chrome, and Edge.

There has certainly been a shift in preference favoring dark mode in the last couple of years. More and more users are starting to exclusively use it to the detriment of light mode, as there's less eye strain involved. This is doubly important in dimmer environments, as stated earlier, and such an extension does well to accommodate it.

Head into Google Docs, and open a document. The extension is only in effect when working on a document, and it's enabled via the Global Toggle option. Upon doing so, the whole interface will change to a dark shade of gray, making it more pleasing to the eye.

The color of the document background can be changed, and the extension provides several options for that. Shade changes the aspect to a shade of gray lighter than that of the interface, so as to preserve the legibility of black text. Dark offers an even darker shade, and with that, you'll need to use white text for readability. Black is another option, and it's as you would expect: pitch black.

You can set a custom color yourself, and this is done by entering the appropriate CSS code for the color you wish to use. A simple internet search should provide you with all the respective commands.
