Encrypting files is still one of the best methods to keep your data away from prying eyes. Locking files behind strong combinations can be done with tons of applications. However, the start of the show is Data Padlock, a simple Firefox add-on that lets you secure files right in the middle of your browsing sessions.

Browser-based encryption is not popular nor widespread. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't give this add-on a chance, since it's very easy to work with. Some users might have privacy concerns, as processing your documents with the help of the browsers doesn't sound very safe. Yet, the add-on uses the browser's cryptographic libraries for securing your files with an AES password. No data leaks or shared logs, everything happens in the confines of your machine.

Click on the add-on's icon to open a new tab holding its UI. The steps are simple. For encryption jobs, you must first drop in the file you wish to have protected in. No format limitations were observed, so throw everything you have at it. Choosing a password is backup up by a strength verifier feature. Build a strong combination until the gauge is full and green for maximum efficiency. Of course, you can save files using weak combinations as well, if that is what you wish - the extension won't stop it.

Upon encrypting an item, a new copy of it will be generated in the browser's download location. Nobody will be able to open a protected file, not even yourself, unless decrypted. The decryption process is almost identical to its counterparts, so no issues should arise there, provided you still remember your passwords.

Data Padlock is a not really a top-notch encryption utility, but for lighter jobs, like securing files for sharing or storing, it should be enough. It earns more of its pints by the simple operation it provides, allowing anyone, no matter the technical abilities, to easily encrypt documents, pictures, audio files, or any type of file in need of protection.
