If you don’t already have a preferred browser theme, then you should know that loading a dark theme while working in front of the computer during nighttime is the way to go to protect your eyesight. If you find it a hassle to change the theme yourself, then you can reply on automaticDark to do it for you.

automaticDark is an add-on for Mozilla Firefox capable of detecting the time of the day based on your location and change the browser’s theme accordingly. In other words, you get the dark theme during the night and enjoy the light theme during daytime.

As you can imagine, automaticDark requires access to your location to be able to detect what the time is and work as it should. You can grant it access to this piece of information when adding it to your browser.

Based on your geolocation, automaticDark calculates the sunrise and the sunset times, so as to know when to change the theme from dark to light and viceversa.

However, if you would rather not share your location, there is a way to still use this add-on. The Settings area allows you manually set the sunset and the sunrise times and even change your favorite theme for daytime and nighttime. Several themes are available in drop-down menus. Alternatively, you can change themes based on your system’s themes.

automaticDark is a good option for automatically changing browser themes to match the time of the day, so as to prevent eyestrain. By giving it access to your location, the change can be done manually, but if you feel reluctant to share this information, then it is possible to set the switch times yourself.
