VPN tools really are very common nowadays, and judging by the number of available solutions, it’s clearly a buyer’s market. There’s an abundance of VPN software, so trying the ones you’re interested in for yourself is the best way to find out what’s most advantageous for you.

The problem is that not all VPN services offer a free trial, which reduces your options if you want to be more frugal. Symlex VPN offers a usable Free version, affordable subscription prices, as well as an intuitive and relatively fast solution for even the non-paying users.

While testing the Free version, I couldn’t help but notice the number of available servers. They’re scattered all across the globe, so the selection is quite impressive when you consider that many solutions are very limiting in this regard.

Curiously, the Purchase page lists that only 2 locations are available in the Free version, contradicting my usage claims. Make of that what you will, as it's probably either a bug or miscommunication issue.

In any case, the speeds weren’t anything noteworthy. They’ll get you by for light browsing and some streaming, but I wouldn’t rely on them for file transfers or high bitrate video consumption. If all you’re looking to do is bypass some geo-blocking restrictions, you can overlook the average speeds given the number of available server locations.

It would be nice for the app to support more possibilities for configuration. Currently, there’s only a Kill Switch, an Auto Connect function, as well as a Protocol setting. The options in terms of Protocol are vaguely defined as Protocol 1 or 2.

At the end of the day, SymlexVPN is a program you should try out for yourself. The Free version should be enough to give you an idea of its pros and cons: as far as I’m concerned, it’s a decent solution whose prices and lenient Free tier are the highlights.
