Ever since the 1980s, sampling has been used in music with great success. While some have criticized the technique as lacking originality, today it is widely accepted that creating music out of sample takes the same amount of creativity as creating it from scratch (if not more).

So without further ado, let’s take a look at Egoist, an audio plugin that makes sampling a really fun and inventive process.

Egoist’s main function is that of a slicer, meaning that you can use it to select exactly which parts of an audio track you want to use as samples. You can then configure the plugin to rearrange the samples in creative ways, while playing with parameters like sensitivity, pitch, length and envelope.

As with most Sugar Bytes plugins, you don’t really have to create anything from scratch, as Egoist comes with over 200 presets and more than 400 sounds that you can slice and sample any way you wish.

Naturally, no piece of modern electronic music could be complete without drums and a bass. The plugin offers you a great variety of these sounds as well, allowing to adjust loudness, resonance, decay and many other parameters. With the right samples, a catchy beat and a full bass, you basically have all the ingredients you need for sketching a song.

After you’re satisfied with the basics, you can add even more personality to your future productions by playing with effects like reverb, delay and chorus. All these elements may not directly lead you to creating a finished piece of music because, as I’ve already stated above, Egoist is more about sketching than anything else. Even so, it’s still a very powerful plugin that any producer can use whenever they just want to play with ideas and get those creative juices flowing.
