If you’re a music geek, then there’s beauty to be found in many virtual synths. Whether you’re admiring their photorealistic designs or their psychedelic digital interfaces, good synths may inspire all sorts of emotions even before you start using them. Nevertheless, nothing will beat the feeling of pure joy that you get when you hit the first right notes. And then when you start to understand how some parameters work, it’s like the program promises you that it will do everything it can to help you make music.

Strobe2 isn’t a perfect synth by any means, but it did manage to inspire feelings like those I’ve just described. Allow me to elaborate.

While Strobe2’s interface isn’t exactly eye-candy, it does have a certain simplicity that welcomes new users. In other words, the synth looks approachable. At its core is a single oscillator, which may come as a surprise to some, since most virtual synths today employ at least two. Well, according to the developers at FXpansion Audio, this one is a “super-oscillator”, and they’re not that far off the mark.

In Strobe2, the oscillator can generate two waveforms simultaneously (a saw and a square), but you can modify them further with parameters such as pitch, pulse-width modulation, detuning, and stacking. Many of the adjustments you make will be displayed by the synth’s scope, which is a very welcome feature that also offers a few editing options. Other parameters include a sub-oscillator, a noise unit, a dual LFO, and two envelopes.

Once you get used to the main sections, you can move on to the arpeggiator/sequencer which is very easy-to-use and can greatly improve your composition. Then you can further modify the sounds by easily adding a series of effects from their dedicated section.

Like many synths of the same kind, Strobe2 has modulation capabilities and plenty of presets that demonstrate its versatility and great sound. I can strongly recommend this instrument if you’re looking for an intuitive and powerful tool that can help you have fun when you’re producing music.
