chipsynth PortaFM

chipsynth PortaFM provides musicians and producers with an advanced synthesizer designed to help you recreate the unique sounds created by the late 80's 'PSS' series. Remember the classic old sounds in the 90's DOS games? You can recreate them with the help of this two-operator FM synthesizer.

You can use chipsynth PortaFM both as a standalone application and as a VST / VST3 / AAX plug-in. As you would probably expect, this new synthesizer does not only copy the sounds of the past, but also brings to the table additional controls and modulation tools, as well as a MIDI-compatible virtual instrument to help you obtain interesting and appealing sounds.

Its main engine relies on a pair of emulated FM chip cores, namely OPLL and OPL2, while drum sounds are generated separately. No samples are used, giving you the freedom to unleash your creativity and create compelling sounds with a vintage touch.

The main GUI provides one-click access to the modulator and the carrier, allowing you to tamper with their parameters as you please. chipsynth PortaFM features a frequency multiplier, keyboard scaling, amplitude control, modulation feedback control, attack rate parameters and so on. The carrier can adjust the waveform, vibrato and tremolo, the KS rate and the envelope percussive mode.

Classic OPLL/OPL2 patches ca be loaded using the preset loader, which is a good starting point. The documentation includes the equivalent settings to analog synthesizers for those who are interested.

chipsynth PortaFM also features performance control tools, as well as an integrated arpeggiator to turn incoming MIDI data into arpeggio patterns, chorus tools to capture rich sounds, ambience reverb, stereo delay controls, step sequencers and other modulation tools.
