It’s not the best idea to use your web browser for every activity you perform on a computer. Not because you computer can’t handle it, but you risk overwhelming the browser with too many activities, with a chance to lose every open page. For instance, you can listen to favorite songs from your computer with applications like Mercury Media Player.
The application takes you through a quick and effortless setup process so that it can blend with your system. It can be then launched directly, but unless you have .NET Framework installed as well, things might not go according to plan.
A classic window frame shows up when you launch the application, most of the space being empty. There’s a set of playback controls, very similar in design to those of Windows Media Player, thus letting you easily get familiar with all options. With little left to explore, you only option remains to load some files and see what it’s capable of.
Unfortunately, file support is not the application’s strongest point, since you only get to load MP3 files. What’s more, this needs to be done through the browse dialog, because drag and drop is not supported. In addition to this, a new file needs to be inserted after the previous song finished, because of the missing playlist editor.
On the other hand, Mercury Media Player comes with another component that acts as a mixing board. Once up, it lets you import multiple songs, and initiate playback in two different players, with the possibility to shuffle songs and change items in between players. However, lists can’t be saved, and there aren’t any effects to work with.
On an ending note, Mercury Media Player comes with good intentions, as a simple alternative to your default audio player. However, the set of features leaves more to be desired, starting with files support which only plays MP3 audios, missing playlist editor, lack of hotkey support for comfortable playback, and more.
