We tend to think of music as the result of layer upon layer of instruments, vocals, and effects. This is the principle behind subtractive synthesis, a technique that is most commonly associated with the early analog synths of the 1960s and 1970s, but still used today in many genres of music.

While the synths of that era were really difficult to use, subtractive synthesis can be achieved today with the help of modern electronic instruments and many digital tools. The first section of its interface features two oscillators with six waveforms ann three split knobs each, a frequency modulator, and a filter.
